The Process of becoming WHS Compliant
Since you have arrived here you have obviously decided that it’s time to take action! Good for you!
In the following I’ll give you an high level overview of what the process of making your business WHS compliant involves. If you are a WHS compliant business than you have developed a safety culture in your business! Why? The great news is that safety is the other side of the WHS Compliance coin. So what is compliance to you is safety to your workers!
I like to use the Nertny Wheel as a way to organise this journey:
Lets have a closer look at the different spokes and outline briefly what they entail and who’s responsible for them:
Controlled Work Environment
is one in which risks are proactively managed and minimized to protect the health and safety of all individuals in the workplace.
This is the premises on how it all works and you can read this as the core responsibility of the PCBU (you the employer / owner / manager of the business, PCBU stands for Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking).
Your core tasks to get this process rolling is to show your commitment to having safety at the centre of your business and develop a safety culture. Besides being committed and communicating this to your workers you will need to provide the required resources and appoint an Safety Officer, of course you could appoint yourself. The big payback of a controlled work environment is that you know what is happening and how things are being done!
Competent People
First we should clarify who your people are, in WHS lingo employees are called workers, but you need to be aware that anyone else engaged by you is a worker such as:
- the cleaners that might come once a week
- the book keeper that prepares your BAS
- the family member that comes in on weekends to clean machinery
- so absolutely anyone who works for you, paid or or unpaid
Our workers must possess the knowledge, skills, training, and experience necessary to carry out specific tasks, responsibilities, or roles related to safety effectively. Competent workers are capable of recognizing, assessing, and managing risks, complying with your company’s WHS policies and procedures, and contribute to the overall safety and well-being of your workplace. They demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to mitigate safety hazards and ensure compliance with WHS requirements.
Fit For Purpose Equipment
refers to tools, machinery, devices, or any equipment used in the workplace that meets specific safety and performance standards, and is suitable for its intended use without presenting undue risks to health and safety. Such equipment should be well-maintained, regularly inspected, and capable of performing its functions in a manner that minimizes hazards and complies with relevant WHS regulations and standards.
Safe Work Practices
refer to established procedures, guidelines, and behaviors that ensure the safety and well-being of workers, prevent incients, and reduce risks in the workplace. These practices include the compliance with relevant regulations, hazard identification, risk assessment, and the adoption of safe behaviors, such as proper equipment use, personal protective measures, and adherence to safety protocols. They aim to create a safe work culture
