1. When you’re planning your fence make sure it’s functional (eg contain cattle, keep wild dogs out etc)
  2. When twiching barb to posts use at least 2.5mm gauge wire to ensure it lasts as long as the barb itself
  3. Don’t use black star posts since these will not last as long as the galvanised wire will
  4. When cutting any galvanised material be sure to spray the cut with cold gal paint
  5. Use inline wire strainers because these allow you to re-strain wires with a shifter any time in the future
  6. Use through post or other adjustable gate hardware so you can adjust gates if and when the strainer posts move a bit
  7. Use the right wire for your situation eg at least 2.5mm for plain and 1.57mm for barb and use soft wire if bush fire prone.
  8. Are you bush fire and or white ant prone? Consider resistant posts such as concrete or metal instead of timber.
  9. Timber posts will last longer if they’re cut out of your property or the under ground part is treated
  10. Use adjustable stays, strainers will move over time, being able to adjust wires and gates (see 5&6) is great but even better if you can ensure the strainer stays straight!
